Food… A Common Language… A Universal Experience…

I enjoy the versatility of food. I love the variety of colors, textures and tastes that can be derived from just one plant, one vegetable, grain, nut, seed, herb, spice, etc. I am also inspired by the myriad ways food brings about joy, creativity, conversation and togetherness. When I’m in my kitchen food prepping and making is more of an international experience for me. I am part of a multi-cultural family and global community, therefore, I’ve incorporated techniques and used ingredients I’ve learned about from tribes of people in different locations around world. The international foods I’ve made I’ve appreciated having. I encourage others to try them too, if you haven’t already.

Who doesn’t love a completely delightful meal… I think the best part of an overall food experience is having a well made meal in front of me. Whether I’ve prepared the food, served it to myself or have been served by another fulfillment transpires even before each first taste. However, it has to be more than the aroma, the colors and the textures, an enticing balance of flavors must appeal to my taste buds too.

I’ve written a lot about my own creative culinary experience. Most of you know that food prepping and making is indeed an art. Beyond the prepping and making, food styling and photography has as well completely captured me. I utilize dishes for my canvases and food as the medium to be styled. There are times when food speaks to me by making its own deigns on or in a dish. Other times, I play with creative ideas of my own or I’ve learned from others. Food not just as sustenance but as art also has been a way to appeal to the senses of humanity.

Let’s speak further about food, yet not in audible or written words. Food encourages dialogue between people as well by way of non-verbal and physical languages. Languages that increase our understanding of people’s thoughts and feelings as they partake in a meal. When there is delicious food made and served to an individual or group of people it makes for great all-inclusive conversation. This is the kind of experience I throughly look forward to and deeply enjoy. An experience that allows us to express freely our satisfaction of an occasion that brings us together, fosters pleasure and is universal.

Following are dishes I have made, styled and photographed for the Natural Food Art Cafe, a plant based, universal culinary experience that has broadened my perspectives of food and of humanity. I have also included a recipe I hope you’ll try and enjoy.

A simple note: Each of the foods I have included in this blog are cross-cultural, versatile and absolutely magnificent. Yum Yum Yummy.

Smoked Truffle Herb Red Potato Squares

  • Steamed red potatoes mashed
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Egg replacement (optional)
  • Olive oil
  • Herbamare
  • Black Pepper
  • Onion and garlic powders
  • Smoked paprika
  • Oregano
  • Basil

Use your intuition to measure how much of each ingredient to add to your mashed red potatoes. Once all ingredients are in a bowl combine well then form into squares. Pour olive oil into a pan, heat then brush front and back of squares with melted vegan butter, truffle oil, Herbamare and black pepper mixture then fry potato squares until golden brown and crispy on the outsides.

I served our Smoked Truffle Herb Red Potato Squares with melted vegan cheddar cheese on top, spicy ketchup and micro greens. These potato squares were yummy and perfect alone or as a side with your main meal. BIG SMILE.

We have the capacity and potential to always be a blessing in our own lives, in the lives of others and in this magical and magnificent world of ours…
