A Community of Gardeners…

My family and I so enjoyed spring and summer 2020… We spent almost each of our days developing, growing and sustaining our gardens… Spending the amount of time we did in nature planting seeds and seedlings and harvesting their herbs, fruits and veggies was tremendously rewarding… The Natural World offers to us a plethora of benefits… one of them being the ability to produce our own organic foods in primal soil… others are the delight of being immersed within the surrounding primitive beauty, even when that was simply the bare elements amidst, the soothing comforts of the earth beneath us and a picturesque view of the sky above… The fullness of health and well-being derived from just being in Nature is immeasurable…

Being able to partake in Nature’s glory during the spring and summer months with my family was truly a gift… Sharing our pleasurable moments with others at our gardens was an even greater blessing… We can’t deny we are social beings… From the very beginning of our lives we have been part of human dynamics… Those dynamics usually include, parents, siblings, if not an only child, grandparents, perhaps, uncles, aunts, cousins and possibly nieces and nephews… Regardless of the makeup of our family dynamics, we’ve been part of human structures that fostered relational experiences, giving us opportunities to learn more about our selves and what it’s like to be human… Relational experiences also provide for us moments in which we are able to grow our knowledge of the world(s) around us as well as the world at large…

The world(s) around my family and I over the spring and summer included our community gardens… We were fortunate to have more than one garden in a few locations, which allowed us to work with different communities. While working with others we got to teach what we knew and acquire new information ourselves… One of our communities included friends who had come to America from other countries… From them we came to learn about previously unfamiliar plants and foods and we were able to witness different gardening/farming techniques that brought forth healthier gardens and greater produce… More often than not, my family and I walked around our public community garden to simply observe and learn. It was wonderful to learn from others how we could make our experience with gardening easier and clearly, more fun and gratifying…

Making life easier… I honestly believe gardening has a way of making life easier for us… The techniques and methods for developing, growing and sustaining a garden are quite simple, when those techniques and methods are organic in nature… There’s not much that is required from us, except the proper care and attention… There’s not as much of our time that is needed either, when we learn to allow Nature, a purely constructive phenomenon, to be Nature… This I learned more from some of our International friends, who still rely on traditional, natural, processes to grow their gardens/farms…

I have deeply loved gardening, small farming, since I first started my own community garden in the back of my house around 2007/2008. During that time I learned a lot about how to keep a healthy garden going… I am happy to say, we did just that, family and friends… we kept our community garden healthy and continually growing… even through the fall and winter season… We happen to plant in our garden autumn and winter crops too… Albeit, my family and I have moved on from our home with our first community garden, the opportunity to pursue gardening in the area we currently reside in has been a wish come true… Plainly, I could never let go of the experience of having my own garden, regardless of where we’ve lived… The experience greatly fulfilled me… and I know it was the same for my family and friends… We were growing our own organic and delicious foods…

There’s too much I love in life to name… of course, you already know gardening/small farming is one thing I’ve already shared… The joy of being in and around Nature is indeed innate for me… The more I learn about gardening/small farming, the more I love the experience… The more I learn about the natural processes of Nature, the easier… the simpler gardening becomes… Holistically, what gardening is really about for me is… I’ve learned to give more back to myself, organically… and it has made me further aware of the gift of socialising… of growing our relationships with something and someone other than ourselves… Our relationship with Nature is after all, a personal and social experience… Social because we are communing and communicating with something—or perhaps Nature is someone too—outside of our selves… Investing time in building myself and in building relationships, including my relationship with our planet, have always been both important and meaningful to me…

I, a long with my fellow gardeners, share a bit more about our experiences with the natural world of plants… As one gardener shares… growing plants in a garden is like giving life to and raising a child/children… Giving life to something that or someone who contributes to nurturing our own souls is one of the greatest blessings in living… There’s more about this in the video below, entitled, “A Community of Gardeners.” This short film was created and produced by, Michael Selissen, a good friend and supporter of our local community… Enjoy and be inspired… BIG SMILE…

Due to my love of sustainable, organic and eco-friendly gardening (small farming), I introduced the GARDEN (SMALL FARM) TO TABLE AND SCHOOL endeavor to my global community initiative, BUILD… With the GARDEN (SMALL FARM) TO TABLE AND SCHOOL initiative my intention is to facilitate in-person and on-line classes and workshops to share with individuals (adults and school age children) how to develop their own sustainable, organic and eco-friendly gardens and care for and grow their own veggie, fruit and herb plants… More about BUILD: GARDEN TO TABLE can be found on the Community Initiatives page and on my social media sites, Instagram and Pinterest, under Dana Rondel.

We have the capacity and potential to always be a blessing in our own lives, in the lives of others and in this magical and magnificent world of ours…
