What Happened To My Memo… Polyester Isn’t A Sustainable Fiber…

Hey… Who forgot to send me a memo on sustainable fibers… before I started my eco-friendly, ethically made, sustainable clothing line… More than a year into starting my own signature collection clothing line, with several creations completed, I’m hearing and reading polyester and acrylic, two synthetic fibers, are not generally listed under the categories spoken of as “sustainable.” However… I am aware through additional research that “synthetic” fibers can be recycled… If a fiber can be re-cycled… up-cycled… down-cycled… re-purposed… re-fashioned… in essence, re-used… can we respectfully call it “sustainable…” I would like to say, yes…

Yes… Yes… Yes… Why yes, because it’s a healthy perspective regarding the use of synthetic fibers… and because I am quite the optimist… I fell in love with loop yarn when I was first introduced to it the end of summer 2018. I took my very first sewing, hand knitting and crochet classes during this year… Once I was in front of a sewing machine… once I had my own crocheting needles and yarn… once I had a skein of loop yarn in my hands… I knew I would take more classes… and I knew starting my own signature collection clothing line was inevitable… My first completed project was an oversized infinity scarf shawl… One plush, silky soft and beautifully vibrant loop at a time I began to create my project… The texture and feel of the 100 percent polyester yarn was delightful… I was pleased by not only its touch, but too by the overall orientation of this yarn I would use to learn how to hand knit…

The pleasure derived from creating my very first article of clothing via the technique of hand knitting… caused me to choose this method as one of my primary means of cloth making… and loop yarn became one of my favorite yarns to work with… What else can I do with amazingly plush and vibrantly colored loop yarns… The ideas began to flow… and flow… and flow… Before long, I had a collection of hats, collars, shawls, sweaters and more… I was excited about what I had produced and wanted others to see my works, including the instructors responsible for teaching me how to use my own hands to make something different and beautiful with yarn…

Making something different and beautiful with yarn… This is the thoughtful inspiration that brought me toward debuting a collection of hand knitted clothing and accessories… and this is the innocent idea that continued to move me throughout my artistic pursuits… Once my clothing line was made public, I received wonderful reviews… This, of course, continued to spark my enthusiasm, therefore, I continued to expand my collection… Now it was time to begin conversations with those who would be interested in showcasing and selling my brands… My brands were created with the concept of sustainability in mind, so I introduce my wearables as “sustainable clothing and accessories.” What fibers have you used… What kinds of fabric… Are your fibers and fabrics eco-friendly… Are they ethically made… Are they actually sustainable… In my own mind, I believe that my wearables are sustainable… One hundred percent polyester and acrylics can be re-cycled… Everything I’ve made is indeed re-cyclable… However, I had to do a bit more research regarding the making of polyester and acrylics…

I went on to do further study… I found there are different processes… different methods used to create most synthetic fibers such as polyester and acrylic… I became aware that polyester and acrylics are usually made using plastics that are broken down by chemical solvents before they become usable fibers… These solvents are said to be less friendly than the natural solvents used to make fibers and fabrics directly from plants… Nonetheless, these solvents, although labeled as chemicals… are byproducts of resources from our natural world… These solvents are a mix of natural resources blended together… The mixing together of natural elements changes the original elemental structures and makes them unlike the elemental structures of organically resourced materials that are left in their primitive state… It’s great to know this… So what now… Me being the optimist… who loves to keep a healthy perspective… couldn’t say, we are destroying our planet by producing “man made” products… However, I will say, simplicity is truly my friend… So, I made the decision to keep things as simple as possible…

Here’s what I’ll do… I’ll continue to love the different and beautiful wearables I’ve created for myself and for others… I’ll keep in mind the positive purposes of synthetically made fibers and fabrics… For instance, I am a “faux real” kinda girl… so, I’ve chosen to use faux furs to compliment my clothing and accessories line… It just so happens that some of our faux fibers contain polyester and acrylic… But, even knowing this… our faux furs are ethical… and sustainable… and if we continue to re-cycle… up-cycle… down-cycle… re-purpose… re-fashion, essentially, re-use the synthetic, virgin and non-virgin fibers and fabrics that are already made and available to us… I believe they are eco-friendly too… I have some really kool faux fabrics waiting to become something different and beautiful… I’m looking forward to showcasing them as part of my line of creative wearables… I’m also looking forward to learning more about the plant based options that are in existence as faux fur and leather alternatives… and the plant based options invented for our future use… I’m quite excited by this…

A portion of the creative wearables I’m starting my clothing line with… may not fall directly under the categories of “eco-friendly” … “ethically made”… and “sustainable” … yet, there are ways to make them so… re-cycle… up-cycle… down-cycle… re-purpose… re-fashion… simply, re-use them… I love that my 100 percent polyester hand knits are “re-makeable.” When you are ready to do your own different and beautiful with my creative wearables… you can… And what else am I offering the world… The different and beautiful that is… keeping things simple… I’ve further looked into some of the plant based alternatives that are ready for our use… and some that are currently being tested… I’ve fallen in love again… I’ve had the pleasure to hold within my own hands… a variety of plant based threads/yarns that have captured my interest… Their appearance… their textures… their colors… their touch… their feel… makes me ecstatic about making the old new once more… Plant based clothing isn’t actually new… Farm to closet isn’t really new… nor are “eco-friendly” … “ethically made”… and “sustainable”… But what is new… is the different and beautiful creations that will be inspired by these concepts… these methods… the minds… the hearts… and hands… that get to make our plant based fibers… our threads… our yarns… our fabrics… our clothing… our accessories… our shoes… and more… I’m ready for this new venture…. The world… our planet… is ready too…
