If I have ever believed another has to change…

or the world has to change for me…

what I was really conveying… is this…

change is due… first… within me…

W… is for… Who… What… When… Where… Why… W… is for WealthWisdom… Wisdom In New Dimensions (WIND)… Woman… WomenWorth… Wesleyan… This list can go on… but I’ll stop at Wesleyan because the red W on my cap actually is for Wesleyan University, the school where I received my Master of Arts degree… I so loved studying at Wesleyan… Their liberal studies and humanities program was the perfect program for someone like me… a free thinker… Perhaps… this is why… when I wear my taupe cap with the capital red W on its front… I also see it as a symbol for other extraordinariness… Wealth… Wisdom… Woman… Women… Worth… and I happily and confidently smile… I do love that my organization, Wisdom In New Dimensions (WIND)… is also included on my list… STILL SMILING…

Over this last month… it’s actually been longer… yet, I’ll focus on the last month… there have been questions directed my way regarding Women and gender equality… Those who know me… know that my thoughts are consistently affirmative… I am always open to have a healthy conversation… therefore, I make a conscious intention to keep my ideas about all people… and all else… or other matters… positive… and uplifting… nonetheless, quite informative… Sharing very honest and real experiences with others is liberating… Doing so… gives me the opportunity to align with my own truths… what I think… believe… and/or know about myself… others… and the world(s) I am part of… Most importantly, I get to learn more about what I think… believe… and know about my own self-Worth

W... for the rest of this message… is for… Woman… Who I am… and for Women… What I share might speak to/for other women too… I never really really really thought about what it means to be a woman until I was in my twenties… It wasn’t because I was officially a woman when I finally met my twenties… it was because I was attending a graduate school, a liberal arts school, that reminded me through my studies, critical analysis writings and group discussions how important it is to think for myself… how important a woman’s perspective is… In my world, both private and public… as a child and an adult… I was taught that all perspectives are important… a man’s perspective… a child’s perspective… and a woman’s perspective… It just so happens… I am a woman… who came to sincerely understand that my very own perspective is important… that my very own perspective matters… not only because I am a woman with her own unique experiences… as well I am an individual with a voice that speaks truths that have the power to create positive and lasting change…

I was raised by a family who first encouraged me to be a free thinker… to think freely and independently of others… a family who taught me the value of being a soloist… So I became a free thinker… who loves free time with herself to better know her own thoughts… ideas… emotions… and feelings… whether I am in the company of others or am alone… I am also… one who isn’t shy about using her own voice… Being someone who isn’t shy about using her own voice… compelled me to also “talk back” to my parents… However, I didn’t talk back because I was disrespectful… I responded back… for I felt my response would bring about the change I hoped for… During my younger years… I didn’t concern myself with the quality of my speech… I more so felt I should give my own voice a chance to express itself… How would others know what I thought or felt if I didn’t allow myself a voice that could be heard…

A voice that could be heard… or a voice that is heard… As I matured… I found even more… how deeply fulfilling it is to be a free thinker… who loves using her own voice… constructively… My voice could always be heard when I talked back or shouted back… when I more assertively or loudly expressed what was on my mind and what I was feeling in my heart… But was I always able to reap the rewards of constructive and positive change… not as often as I would’ve liked… When my voice was truly heard… when it brought forth the constructive and positive changes I actually hoped for… I wanted… it was when my mindful thoughts and healthy truths… mental… emotional and physical… were affirmatively expressed… I was able to express myself more constructively… positively and affirmatively when I was more comfortable with me… my own truths…  and what I believed and knew to be my own self worth… Whether anyone else heard my truths wasn’t as important as whether I heard them… I was the one who would first bring about the change I hoped for… I wanted… Change would always begin with me… It always does whether I… you… we… are fully conscious of this knowing or not… Am I Worthy… of what I hope for… what I want… Undoubtedly, yes… and so constructive… positive… and healthy change transpires… Is my answer, yes, because I am a woman… This depends… Most of my yeses have been because I know without question… I am worthy… and because I am a free spiritual human being… who has a choice regarding the way I want to live… My, yeses, support the very best choices I am aware of…

The way I want to live… I have studied and learned about systems… schools of thought… religious and spiritual philosophies, doctrines… creeds… I have learned about cultural norms… customs… traditionalism… modernism… and other ideas… beliefs… and notions about personal potential and pursuits… I respect most of what I am familiar with… and I accept that others have the freedom to choose their own way of life just as I have… I am grateful that my own view of life… my own way of being alive within this world is indeed respected and accepted… Am I okay with Patriarchy… yes, when practiced in a loving… kind and respectful way… Am I okay with Matriarchy… yes, when practiced in a loving… kind and respectful way… Am I okay with… it depends… nonetheless, if I am… when practiced in a loving… kind and respectful way… Gender equality… yes… when there is mutual love… kindness and respect…

Growing up… my family never directed my thinking toward gender equality… or maybe they did… in very subtle ways… Beginning early in life… I was raised to believe I could do anything I thought I could… and so I never thought that I couldn’t do anything or be anyone I wanted… Did I dance like a girl… softer and more graceful… or play sports like a boy… with an edge… No one pointed out to me that I was being a girl or a boy while dancing more softly and gracefully or while playing sports with an edge… If someone did, which might’ve happened once while playing sports… it didn’t keep me from being me… honestly… I simply focused on being the very best at everything I gave my energy and time to.  Truthfully, I moved through life as if I could accomplish anything I wanted… personally and professionally… I never placed limitations on my self… There may’ve been occasions when a subtle hint of doubt entered my thoughts, but what ever measure of doubt I had… it never made me fully believe I couldn’t or wouldn’t… I am grateful for the upbringing I had… which included my mom’s belief… If you can get a B then you can get an A… Mediocrity wasn’t acceptable in my home while growing up… nor was settling for any thing… Settling for a life that doesn’t authentically allow for one’s truest potential and happiness… is giving in to a life of mediocrity… As a child and as an adult neither was acceptable…

I am grateful I have grown into a mature woman who loves and respects her very own life… and loves and respects life… overall… Therefore… I have been and still am fortunate to have relationships with women… men… and children reflecting this quality of being… Why won’t I argue and fight for women’s rights…  because there is no want or need to fight for what I unconsciously… subconsciously… consciously and in totality know I have… I also have no want or need to argue or fight for the right to be a woman… who I am… what I am… when I am… where I am… why I am… because there is no argument or fight within me regarding who… what… when… where… why… I am…  I love… respect… and accept the woman I am in this world… the woman I am choosing to be… first… for me… and the woman I am choosing to be for others… If I have ever believed another has to change… or the world has to change for me… what I was really conveying… is this… change is due… first… within me… mindfully… emotionally… physically… lovingly… healthily… gracefully… confidently… courageously… kindly… affirmatively… beautifully… This is the truth of individual potential… individual power… individual empowerment… individual transformation… This is the truth of individual love… individual worth… individual being… individual becoming… and the individual life… BIGGER SMILE…
