HONEY BEE… SWEET BEE…
BÉE YOU… AND I’LL BEE ME…
I LOVE YOU BEEING YOU…
AND I LOVE BEEING ME…
At a very early age I was taught… self-presentation is important… the way I presented myself to myself, to others… and to the world… This wasn’t just a lesson taught by words… I saw with my own eyes how members of my family put together their attire… Not only did my family members, and close friends of my family too, focus on showcasing their own unique styles, they made sure their clothing was clean and perfectly pressed… When I became independent enough to pick out my own clothing, which I began doing while in elementary school… a finely pressed garment was essential… I don’t believe I ever left my home with wrinkled clothing adorning my body… Wrinkle free became a virtue for me…
Wrinkle free doesn’t mean… once I put on my clothing they didn’t at some point wrinkle… it simply meant my clothes had to be without wrinkles, perfectly pressed before put on… Yes, I did spend more time than I probably needed to ironing my clothes, yet my mother… nor could anyone else… say I left my home unkempt… My siblings and I were children whose mother made sure we were clean, smelled fresh and dressed well… Mom, herself, was known to be a very well dressed woman, one who also spent as much time as needed at our ironing board… Whether mom’s clothing were ironed or not, much of her clothing found their way to my closet… and stayed in my closet for as long as I could keep them… This started in high school… Before then I wore all of my own clothing… which you could find with multiple creases in the pants legs and collars of my shirts… Sometime around my junior high school years… I began following this trend of ironing multiple creases in the fronts and backs of shirts, sweaters and pants… Instead of having one crease ironed down the center of my front and back pants legs, I had at least three or four creases in front and in the back of my pants… When I saw others doing the same with shirts and sweaters, I adopted this style too… No one could ever say my clothes hadn’t been ironed…

I was brought up in family and friend dynamics that fostered the love of art… Artistic creativity was quite abundant in my worlds… throughout my childhood and is still as an adult… Fashion was considered an art… “Fashion artists” in my life were literally walking murals… The way colors, patterns, designs and fabrics were put together by these individuals could make any person want to take a longer look… I love that fashion can be looked at in this way… a creative endeavor… an artistic creation… rather than a materialistic way of being… In my worlds someone’s finanancial means could not be guessed or told by the clothing one had on… It was simply one’s style that got the attention… Does my work of art… my style… my fashion sense… truly speak to me… and to others… Unuttered or uttered conversation influenced by artistic creativity was/is indeed what could bring us all to the road of commonality… regardless of cultural influences and traditions…
Why am I really talking about this… because more important than any thing else I’ve learned… one’s own sense of self… is what stands out most when the conversation is on style… So the next time you see me with clothing on that appears wrinkled… it is not my intention to cause one to believe I have abandoned the virtue of perfectly pressing my clothes… I’ve simply increased my freedom to dress to impress… first and foremost me… The first time I saw clothing that was sold with natural and hand made crinkles… it was indeed a look I wasn’t familiar with, or perhaps one that had not really peaked my own interest… Yet, now that my own confidence and independence have greatly increased around my own style… mostly influenced by my own pleasant inner moods, I’ve decided that crinkles found in any of my garments are quite fashionable… Therefore, if you happen to notice my clothing looking perfectly wrinkled rather than perfectly pressed… a crinkle is not a wrinkle… within my style repertoire… My crinkles are plainly art that gives my clothing a bit more character… BIG SMILE…
