The Influence of Writing In Our Lives… The Emotion and Character of Words…

Once I decided to become a professional writer, I immediately began to study the craft. I attended private or public workshops, enrolled in writing courses while in graduate school, participated in writing groups, read more and more books within different genres and did whatever else was required to develop my own unique style and voice. I truly enjoyed writing, especially creatively, so nothing I did felt like work. It was an enjoyable experience to write and develop papers and manuscripts on topics that interested me. It was also lots of fun to discover what made my own style and voice standout. It took years before I felt I had a style and voice that was rare… But, as time went on… and I became more and more familiar with what worked for me… and what delighted my own senses… I practiced and perfected my own way of writing and telling a story…

Believe it or not, almost everything written is a story of some kind… To make a story effective, really effective… there are certain techniques I use. These techniques work in technical writing, creative writing, book writing, blog writing, business plan writing, etc. These techniques are not difficult to learn, but to be good at using them, in all sorts of writing, practice is necessary… How much practice… That’s for each person, individually, to decide. The better question is, how compelling a writer do I want to be… When I began focusing on a writing career, my plan was to become a great motivational and inspirational writer… I didn’t focus on becoming better than the greats we know and love, I focused on what will inspire those who read my work… and keep them inspired…

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love a good story, whether oral, written or visual. Yet, just making up an experience and sharing it may not be enough to keep someone’s attention. The story I tell should be based on someone and/or something I can actually relate to. It should feel real… Does this apply to fiction as well… Yes! When I write a fictional story, I share thoughts, emotions, feelings, etc. that I am very familiar with. Otherwise, how can I give an accurate description of something I do not know anything about. If I have not experienced joy, my own or someone else’s, how do I simply and clearly describe the emotions and feelings of joy for another… How do I know which words to use… Words that will stimulate the minds and touch the hearts of others and get them to connect in some way… Emotion and feeling are what create relationships… are what bring them beyond just an idea… Relationships give our lives greater definition…

I knew I was mastering the skills of creative and scientific writing when my work started getting recognition in various fields, nationally and internationally. Following my literary achievements, writing workshops were being requested of me. The requests came not long after the publication of my first book, a fiction novel, entitled, “A Flower: It Has Its Own Song.” In this book, I delve deeply into my experiences as a child and as a young adult growing up in urban America. I included true life perspectives and incorporated bits of historical data from the time periods in the story. My first novel is categorized as fiction, nonetheless, a portion of it is auto-biographical and some parts are based on American history… I learned that what most appealed to the reader in my first story was its authenticity… Its quality of “genuineness.”  I decided the quality of “genuineness” would remain; it would have a voice easily heard in everything I write…

I was happy with the acknowledgments my debut novel garnered. I went on to write a second novel, a children’s book, a collection of short inspirational books, a book on life and leadership and more… In total, I have seven books published and available on Amazon.comBarnesandnoble.com and additional information about my work can be found at: partnersingoodwill.com … Truthfully, it is a dream come true to make a life, a beautiful and inspired life, as an influential writer… Think about these words, “Make A Life…” These words have tremendous meaning… They have even more power when we come to the realization that in everything we do, we are making and re-making our lives… So, what kind of life do you want to make… What story or stories do you want your life to show and tell… Perhaps you’ll think about this more… while you are writing your next journal entry, essay, manuscript, business plan, marketing advertisement, TV commercial, feature film and so on…

Some years back I was asked to create audios for my books… I started the process… Stopped… Started again… This idea is still a work in progress… Being honest with myself and with others, I simply enjoy the touch and feel of a book in my hand, folding the top edge of a page I want to refer back to, highlighting a quote, verse, sentence or paragraph that deeply intrigues me and building my own in-home library… I know at some point… I will make available to the public audios of my work, but for now, please continue to enjoy what I have written and published. I do, however, have a small surprise for you… I took time to record on audio my process and the techniques that have made my writing attractive to readers… Normally, I would share this information in one of my personal or on-line writing seminars. The cost would be comparable to what an established author usually asks for an hour or more long session… I’ve decided to extend my “Becoming A Great Writer” audio to you for only $5.99… A gift… plainly to say, ‘thank you, for allowing me to inspire your life through verbal, written and visual words… I am deeply grateful…’

Just to let you know… My writing seminars and workshops are a lot of fun… If I can keep the interest of elementary school students… and get them to write out and work on 1 and 2 page short stories without any loss of their attention, I can do the same with you… Remember, story telling is used in almost every kind of writing… Story telling is what captures the minds and hearts of people and connects them to someone or something that you believe matters… The people and things that give significance to our lives always matter… Let’s write!!!

We have the capacity and potential to always be a blessing in our own lives, in the lives of others and in this magical and magnificent world of ours…
