It’s a New Year. This year 2026, once again, I have no resolutions, nonetheless, I am completely optimistic about the days, weeks and months ahead. I am grateful for the new adventures coming and for favorable promises being fulfilled. There are also a number of old practices and customs I have continued to look forward to. Those reminding us of the value of tradition. One practice specifically is the art of pickling. This method of preserving food is quite ancient and has been passed down through generations within my family. It is a custom that fosters connection, preservation and longevity.

The practice of pickling my own fresh foods from my home garden for me was a joyful act. And it indeed is an art to create the perfect brine for the vegetables, fruits, etc. being preserved. Some individuals also make or shop for a precise jar and sometimes design their own lids.I like to keep jars that had other foods in them, clean and re-use for storing, pickling and preserving. Pickling one’s own foods is simply a treasure, especially because we can keep longer some of the foods we sincerely enjoy and because homemade pickled and preserved vegetables and fruits are timeless special gifts for relatives and friends. Timelessness itself is too a gift. Enjoy the dishes below with my homemade pickled ingredients, cucumbers, carrots, red onions, black beans and cabbage . BIG SMILE.
