It’s Amazing What Will Happen… When Your Heart Is In To It… Dance That Is…

Dance… It’s almost 7 years now since I endeavored to lead the Annual International Celebration of Dance (AICOD)… It was in 2013, not long after I moved back to Connecticut, my home state, I was brought to learn about this particular initiative… When I learned I was the one considered to move dance forward as an ambassador of dance, I stepped into the role without putting much thought into it… There were others who had ideas about how dance could play a more significant role in our world… and, of course, I had ideas too… As time moved… and I began to bring my ideas to life, I would witness dance coming more alive… I could feel its life and vibrancy elevating… The vitality of movement… of dance… was increasingly finding its way from thought to emotion… and feeling… I started to really feel its heart… I started to truly feel its movements… to honestly feel dance…

So this is where I’d start… from the heart… of dance… Dance is a modality known in myriad forms, technical and non-technical… Both technical and non-technical dance have enlivened me; nevertheless, my own intimate practices have mostly included spontaneous and improvisational movement… I have choreographed performances for stage containing technical choreography, at times with various degrees of free form movement… I’ve always encouraged improvisational dance within my formal instructional classes and have explored improv more often than not within my solo practices… I find that spontaneous, improvised movement is influenced more by our hearts than our heads… I appreciate in depth… allowing my body to flow into the rhythmic movements it intuitively wants to express rather than executing focused movements… I still find, however, that focused movement is quite artistic too…

The art of dance… A choreographer is like a sculptor… an architect… As a choreographer, which is what all dancers actually are too, whether formally or informally, it is wise to become deeply familiar with one’s own body… one’s own substance and style… most essentially, one’s own rhythm… Following one’s own music, one’s own heart, puts us directly in touch with our own innate feelings… a primitive language that speaks to the self, holistically… It is as though communication between the mind, body and spirit is so fluid… thought is totally transcended… The mover, the artist, then is able to unconsciously bring one’s self beyond any and all perceived limitations one might have previously accepted… It is like the choreographer as sculptor… automatically taking away from the work, from one’s self, parts not needed, for the perfected piece… like the choreographer as architect… using only what is needed to construct a ripe form… a physical structure… the human body itself, made and rooted by its strong foundation and inner systems… its inner instruments… to demonstrate the beauty and brilliance of life as stillness and as motion…

Maybe what I’ve written in the before paragraph seems a bit technical… but when the eyes… the heart… the body… are captured by conscientious art… by soulful dance… I’ve witnessed human beings being silently and audibly moved… Their movement is not for me scientific by any means… it is not rehearsed at all… it is simply the music of their own primitive life reflecting itself as a living physical body… a living spirit… in a harmonious… melodic… and rhythmic dance… graceful matter and pure breath acquiescent… It is this that greatly inspires me… to feel inside of my own life the music… the breath… feelings and emotions… that compel me to move spontaneously… to move without the direction and guide of choreographic instruction… It is this that mostly inspires me to dance…

I’ve realized not all dance will be without choreography… not all dance will allow for solely spontaneous and improvisational movement… Yet, it is not this that matters… what is vital for me is… that dance is mainly energized by one’s own human heart… that one’s movement is of genuine feelings… sincere emotions… that one becomes empathetic toward one’s own life geology… in order to become more in-tune… perhaps, more in synch… with him/her whole self… Dance for me is not just performance… it is a transcendental experience… a journey away from what was familiar and toward what is fresh… what is new, including what was unthought of about one’s own existence… If dance had a defined purpose… I would say, dance is simply to explore who and what something or someone is and can be… Nevertheless, what if we choose not to define a purpose for dance… what if we plainly let ourselves just be in the experience… without naming what movement is creating for us inwardly and outwardly… What if every movement is intuitive… What if there is no conscious awareness of how movement is actually changing us… What if we are… throughout our experience with dance… free… simply free… in our totality… Then is there something or someone to overcome… is there something or someone to transcend… In mind, maybe there is something or someone… the thought of something or someone… In heart… there is just feeling… there is just emotion… there is just rhythm… vibrations… that move us… movements seen… and unseen… music… felt… and unfelt… music… reminding us that we are living… that we are alive… that we are present… that we are present…

Being present… I am grateful I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to lead the Annual International Celebration of Dance (AICOD).  Since sharing my life within this capacity there’s so much more I’ve learned about artistic motion… particularly, how rewarding dance is when there is true passion for this creative modality… True and unequivocal passion has a way of inspiring us toward endeavors that continue to foster healthy and positive images of movement… What once seemed impossible in the world of dance and in the world itself… becomes possible… What once appeared as only a dream… becomes an affirmative reality… When the blooming, unambiguous and alluring world we hope for is made real before our eyes… more and more we see ourselves as undoubtedly worthy of our gifts… of the blessings bestowed upon us; and therefore, become consistently and unselfishly open to… and delightfully expectant of… the greater that can and will as well make it into our lives… Maybe dance is plainly a metaphor for life… Dance, whether audibly or silently, asks us to let go… let go… let go… and trust where your own heart, when free, will keep you… and/or bring you… conceivably, in-tune and in-touch with one’s own noble self…

Let go… let go… let go…let yourself go… and let yourself dance…  with and/or without purpose…

We have the capacity and potential to always be a blessing in our own lives, in the lives of others and in this magical and magnificent world of ours…
