I have no idea what inspired my interest in harem pants… or when I actually started to like them… Today, I adore them… Maybe because of their versatility… Maybe because I was somehow persuaded (smile)… I’ve seen many harem pant designs throughout the years… I favor more those designed with the front and back crotch between the inner legs low and drape-like… To me, they’re more chic, albeit I love to see them as casual dress… One can get quite creative with this style of pants… As a fashion stylist and influencer, while also wearing additional titles, I was encouraged by others to come up with my own style ideas for harem pants… After some thought, I grabbed an old garment of mine and let myself have fun…

I playfully transformed my old garment into harem pants, but before I go on about this… first, a little history about this make of pant… Recently, I did a search online… I typed… harem pants… to see what was out in the cyber world… I ended up with a list of different sites with various harem pant designs… Some sites were simply showcasing new designs, some were retail sites and others were both design and retail in one… Although, it was interesting to see what new harem pant designs made their way into the world, I found it more enjoyable to learn that these loose, baggy tunics had been in existence for at least 2000 years… and that harems were first designed for men as traditional wear in the eastern world… One name given to these pants early on was Dhoti… They were made by wrapping a long and wide piece of cloth around the upper or lower waist… then twisting one or more ends of the long, draped cloth to form loosing fitting pants before tucking the end(s) into the waist… This all was done without sewing tools, kits and machines… My kinda fashion designing… although, I love to sew as well (smile)…

Later in time… men unexpectedly opened themselves up to learning a more fashion savvy way of wearing harem pants, also called salvars and shalwar, dimije, sirwal and sharovary, by introducing them to women… Women, albeit men didn’t know it at the time, could give these self-made pants, traditionally worn by men, more style and appeal… Once women actually began wearing harem pants men noticed how sexy women looked in them…What men really wanted was to show their women as innocent and modest… Harem pants were, therefore, reimagined in the minds of men, so they could instead see harem pants fitted on women plainly as traditional, loose and drape-like trousers… however, women still made harem pants look quite sexy (smile)…

As time moved… harem pants became so appealing on/to women… that these style of pants began to take the place of some of the less comfortable attire women wore mostly during the 19th century… Bloomers is one version of harem pants that women could be seen in… They were usually worn in a layered fashion under other clothing such as dresses, long or short skirts and petticoats… They were considered by women… a liberating form of attire compared to the heavier and snug dress forms they had gotten used to… Bloomers, the modern style of harem pants, made more than just a stylish fashion statement when seen on women… By the 19th century, women were not just showing their preferences in dress, they were once more showing themselves as compliments and equals to men… Throughout history, women always had a significant place in the world, whether or not gender role playing was popular; nevertheless, women wanted to more articulately, artfully and clearly show their versatility in the 19th century when it seemed men were more vocal … What better way for women to show their versatility than by introducing into the world themselves… as a preferred wearable… a versatile garment such as… the harem pant…

In honor and in celebration of the free, articulate, creative, stylish and sexy woman… I am, myself, introducing into the world as well …the art of versatility… in more recent years recognized as simply—the harem pant… loose fitting and drape-like… The pant known in greater significance as—the pant without gender biases… And here it is… shown again below in exquisitely liberating form… designed without tools, a kit or sewing machine, but by plainly turning up-side-down an old, long sleeved sweater of mine… and shaping it while on my own physical form… Speaking of both my physical form and my sweater, it was not only a great idea to turn my sweater up-side-down to change its relationship with old ideas, it’s always been a great idea to turn my physical form up-side-down too, to change its relationship with the world, both material and spiritual… Perhaps, it would benefit us all to consider the greater appeal of life when turned up-side-down… or should I say, when refashioned, reinvented or renewed… BIG SMILE…
