Connecticut holds a myriad of delightful memories and history for me and my family. There have been lots of firsts for us here, plenty of visits to our family parks and playgrounds and occasions enjoying the nostalgic journeys through time with relatives and friends. Some of these nostalgic journeys included our fondest road trips in state with our mom and our dad when my older brother and me were still quite young. Our rides into the town of Windsor by way of Main Street in Hartford where one of our family parks, Keney Park, is located also had an Antique Car Shop nearby. It was a pleasure getting to see the older vintage vehicles on display on the grounds of the shop, especially when we also got to see them cruisin’ by.

Albeit, there were usually one or no more than a few or so antique automobiles we saw at once during these trips, it was like seeing a parade when the drivers of the vintage vehicles waved to us. My brother and I waved back as we twisted around in our seats in mom’s car to keep the antiques in sight. These remembrances influenced my own growing interest and joy of the historic cars that remained and still remain with us. These occasions also speak to the invaluable culture of community, preservation, recreation and enjoyment that is pervasive in our state of Connecticut.

Museums filled with culture and history are prevalent in Connecticut as well as historical societies, educational academies, libraries and clubs. As young children my brother and I were greatly influenced by each, nevertheless, our educational experiences also came by way of street museums. Street museums were simply experiential learning that allowed my brother and me to see culture and history at the airport, where we sat on the roof or hood of our mom’s car and watched several makes and models of planes fly off into the sky and land not far from where we were. Our trips also brought us into the presence of street trolleys and railroads where we saw live trains, some old and some new. We as well visited the actual Connecticut Trolley museum in Windsor near the airport. And spending time on the coastal shores of Connecticut and other locations in New England let us witness history and culture by way of the old and new boats and ships at the docks and marinas. Farms too are a big part of our lives in Connecticut. Lands that greatly influenced our cultures and history. Though as children we were active in many different aspects of life… seeing an antique car on the road with a friendly face and hand wave left us with memories and smiles that like the vintage experience still remains.
